Backstory
Nick Barringer, a world-renowned surfer and Navy Aircrew Master Chief reached with an incredible proposition:
Create an inclusive illustration design for Chula Vista Brewery in San Diego, CA for their new summer Double IPA.
Picking a Name
The IPA would be named after Breakers Beach– a strip of deceptively beautiful coastline where Naval Aircrewmen are trained relentlessly to be mission ready. I started exploring designs with quick sketches and also sent a rough mockup to Nick and the brewery's owner, Tim, and received a phone call:
"Congrats man you got the gig!"
The Process
I moved from pencil and paper to digital programs, Adobe Photoshop and Affinity Designer.
Affinity Designer gives you the freedom to "draw" in vector shapes so I used that over PS in case they wanted to print it in large formats.
Several variations were sent to the client.
The Final Result
Although the green version was my favorite, they went with the more vibrant pink which I also liked. Nick called a couple days after the official launch and ecstatically told me,
"DUDE! THEY COMPLETELY SOLD OUT ALREADY! GREAT JOB!"
Ever Evolving Journey
I was blown away by this project and the opportunity to collaborate with fellow helicopter rescue swimmer Veterans.
This rewarding experience made me want to start a small Veteran-owned microbrewery so if anyone has advice on where to start, I'd love to have a conversation!
