Backstory
I came across an interesting exhibit that caught my attention while taking my family to the zoo. The aquatic exhibit consisted of an old green bicycle sitting at the bottom of the tank with several alligator gar swimming eerily around it.
My imagination turned the bicycle into a WWII motorcycle that was attacked during a mission and ended up at the bottom of a lake and I started thumbnail sketching layouts.
The Goal
The goal was to get the viewer to start thinking about why the motorcycle was at the bottom of the lake and draw their own conclusion.
Reimagining value
I wanted to evoke a sense of mystery from the viewer using atmospheric painting techniques in Procreate and worked to get the murkiness just right.
Referencing 20,000 Leagues and others helped me determine the color palette.
Early design exploration
The illustration eventually became the basis for a beer label for a conceptual brewery.
The challenge was deciding whether to take a digital painting approach or a solid color approach to depict the underwater scene.
Product Design
With the illustration created I focused on the product mockups.
Imaginative Journey
It's intriguing how a trip to the zoo can spark inspiration. I've learned to just go with it and see where the imagination will take you.
