Backstory

AFC received a grant to redesign their digital infrastructure to rescue them out of their software fire. After using TSE to create a new custom website and student-facing application only a year before, AFC again partnered with us to challenge their original software processes, and create an experience that is efficient and easy to use.

I joined the team as they were launching the new website and had the honor of working alongside the dev team to build an internal Dashboard system from scratch.

The Challenge

A major challenge was that the agency didn't have a defined software development process so we worked closely to develop one.

While we were busy working out the kinks of the new process, I started mapping out ideas and concepts on the glass walls at the agency.

Understanding user needs

The AFC internal team was extremely helpful in explaining the main target audiences. Through research and user interviews, I discovered that if we could impact Training Officers, the benefits trickled down to every other user group. This became our strategic focus.

We interviewed a Training Officer named Johnny and learned that his entire process was nearly 100% manual so we set out to help him streamline the way he qualified his firefighters.

User-Centered Approach

With Johnny in mind, there was a shift in the team's attitude. They started saying, "Johnny would love that!" or "I can't wait to see Johnny's face light up when he sees this!"

I began to map out the user journey in Miro, design low fidelity mockups in Framer, and continued to ideate the student flow on glass walls.

Low Fidelity Design

I continued to ideate on the glass walls and, leveraging insights from user research, envisioned the AFT student login and account user flow experience.

Defining the Dashboard

During the design phase I worked with designer Shelby B. and developer Stuart H to tackle the Admin Dashboard.

Followup

After working closely with both internal stakeholders, designers, and developers, the dashboard was complete. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive and online enrollments were up by 60%.

Stu and I were personally invited to attend the AFC Chief's conference in Birmingham, Alabama where we got to see and hear firsthand feedback of the positive impacts the dashboard was making. This feedback was compiled and added to a strategic directive for future work.

What a rewarding experience!

Everlasting Impact

Our work continues to make a posititive impact for the college. We also learned that in one semester, we cut down on the use of 10,000 sheets of paper previously used for enrollements which equates to an entire tree!
